Whether it’s a move or a simple rearrangement, moving heavy furniture is not a simple matter.
Use these simple techniques to move heavy, bulky items without damaging your back, house or furniture. How to move heavy furniture yourself – use your head, not your back.
Carry large items up and down
A large chest of drawers, file cabinet or shelf are difficult to handle. Make it a two-person job.
Tip the item backwards at an angle and have one person carry the top of the item while the other carries the bottom.
This helps center the weight and prevents the item from tipping out of control. It is also easier to carry the item up or down stairs because the carrying angle will more or less match the slope of the stairs.
Hang chairs on the corners
A large chair may not be easy to move. Follow the lead of professional movers and “hang” large chairs in the corners.
Turn the chair on its side so it looks like an “L” and move it backwards into the doorway first. Then wrap (hang) it around the door frame and pass it through.
How to move a sofa: Put sofas in an upright position
If you ever have to maneuver a sofa down a hallway and through a door, you may find it nearly impossible to carry it horizontally and around the room.
Before entering the hallway, place the sofa on its end and slide it to the doorway.
You will almost always be able to get it through the door. If it’s a little higher than the door opening, move the top away from the door and gain several inches of clearance.
Furniture transport straps
Moving and lifting straps relieve your back by relying on leverage and large muscle groups.
They also leave your hands free to handle bulky objects. However, they can be difficult to use on stairs because the weight is entirely transferred to the person going down.
Do not carry or drag your furniture
You can buy furniture slides in different shapes and sizes at home centers and online.
It’s also easy to make your own slides from plastic container lids, Frisbees, bedspreads, moving blankets, towels and carpet scraps.
Use hard plastic glides for carpet, and soft, padded glides for hard floors.
Protect furniture with blankets and plastic
Moving blankets are invaluable for protecting the items you are moving as well as your home. Of course, renting them is not expensive, but you can buy several for a few euros.
To avoid damaging the finish and fragile edges of dressers, tables and other furniture, wrap them completely with moving blankets and secure them with plastic wrap. A 20″ x 1,500′ roll of stretch film costs about $20 at home centers and moving companies.
Plan furniture placement
If you’re moving to a new home, decide in advance which furniture will go where. Before you move, draw a floor plan with the correct measurements of each room, measure your furniture, and create your layout.
If you are in Sharjah, and having the plan to hire a professional moving company, Tariq furniture movers Sharjah should be you first choice. Then, when you move in, you (or your helpers, if you’re not there) can place your furniture in the right place and not have to touch it again. To make it easier for movers, tape a copy of the plan to the wall in each room so people can tell at a glance where things are going.
